Understanding Photovoltaic Power Potential
A short reference to help you interpret the numbers on the map.
What is PV Power Potential?
Photovoltaic Power Potential (PVOUT) measures how much electricity a typical solar panel system can generate at a given location, normalized per kilowatt-peak of installed capacity. It is the standard metric used by the World Bank's Global Solar Atlas to compare solar resources worldwide. The higher the value, the more energy each panel produces over a year.
Lebanon's Range
Lebanon's yearly PV potential ranges from 1,387 to 1,972 kWh/kWp, or about 3.8 to 5.4 kWh/kWp/day. The coast is lowest, the Bekaa Valley highest.
How to Use the Number
Multiply the kWh/kWp value by your planned system size (in kWp). For example, a 5 kWp rooftop in Baalbek (~1900 kWh/kWp) yields ~9,500 kWh per year — enough to cover most of a typical Lebanese household's consumption.

Practical Implications for Lebanon
Energy independence
Lebanon faces chronic power shortages. With PVOUT above 1500 kWh/kWp nationwide, even small rooftop systems can displace a large share of expensive diesel-generator electricity.Economic payback
At current Lebanese electricity tariffs and diesel prices, a residential system in the Bekaa typically pays back in 4–6 years and continues to produce for 25+ years.Utility-scale potential
The eastern Bekaa and Hermel regions offer conditions comparable to top-tier Mediterranean solar sites, making them ideal candidates for large PV farms.Frequently Asked Questions
